Ikan Transparan

Dapat dikatakan ini temuan pertama spesies ikan berbentuk kubah dan transparan. Peneliti mengamati ikan bermata bulat (barreleye) menggunakan peralatan canggih yang dioperasikan dari jarak jauh (a remotely operated vehicle/ ROV)
Pada foto 2 dan 3 terlihat keunikan yaitu bola mata ikan yang seolah dapat berputar ke atas. Pupil mata yang berada di bagian atas ini berfungsi untuk melihat mangsa yang berada di atas ikan tersebut. Sedangkan warna hijau yang terlihat dalam gambar adalah semacam lensa yang melindungi mata dari sinar matahari. Dengan begitu mata tetap fokus pada mangsanya.


“Bola mata itu tampak seperti melihat langsung ke atas,” ujar Kim Reisenbichler, peneliti MBARI.
Ikan barreleye (Macropinna microstoma) memiliki panjang 6 inchi (15 sentimeter). Sebenarnya ikan ini telah dikenal sejak tahun 1939 saat tersangkut jaring nelayan.
Foto ikan transparan pernah juga dirilis pada 2001. Ikan ini bentuknya memanjang mirip akar tumbuhan. Ikan ini ada yang memiliki panjang hingga 10 meter. Foto 4.
